Join the St. George’s Chamber Orchestra, Beckenham’s
professional orchestra, and their conductor Madeleine Lovell for an enchanting
evening of 19th and 20th-century classics. Soprano Katherine Broderick, winner
of the Maggie Teyte Prize, will perform Benjamin Britten’s astonishing cycle of Rimbaud settings, Les Illuminations. This work brilliantly conveys the poet’s kaleidoscopic imagination in ten short pieces of vividly individual character. The programme opens with Grieg’s Holberg Suite in which the composer fondly recalls music of a bygone age, melding it with the beautiful lyricism and lush harmonies of his own folk-influenced style. Barber’s spellbinding Adagio is followed by Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, a four-movement masterpiece overflowing with exquisite melody and vivacious energy.

Bach’s sublime Orchestral Suite in D opens the concert, containing one of
his most celebrated pieces - the Air on a G string. We are delighted to
welcome the wonderful soprano, Marie Vassiliou, to sing Mozart’s effervescent Exsultate Jubilate, along with two beautiful opera arias. To end, Haydn at his exhilarating best in the Symphony No. 96 in D.
First Concert of the New Year

the Parish Church of St. George, High Street, Beckenham
Mozart: Overture to La Clemenza di Tito, K. 621
Mozart: Violin Concerto No.3 In G, K.216

Bartok: Romanian Folk Dances
Beethoven: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36
Conductor: Madeleine Lovell
The programme opens with the exhilarating overture to La Clemenza di
Tito, Mozart’s operatic masterpiece from the last year of his life. This is
followed by perhaps the most well-loved of Mozart’s violin concertos, the G
major, performed by the internationally acclaimed soloist Ning Kam. Bartok’s
seductive Romanian Dances make an engaging prelude to Beethoven’s Second
Symphony – a work which traverses the deepest lyrical pathos and the most
high-spirited jollity.
Ning Kam studied at the Yehudi Menuhin school, before attending the Curtis Institute of Music and Cleveland Institute of Music. She performs regularly with orchestras around the world, and has won prizes at several major international competitions, including Second Prize at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition of Belgium in 2001. Her recent performance at the Purcell Room in London was described as ‘gutsy and electrifying’ by The Times.
